Search Engine Optimization Techniques

The internet platform has changed over the years. The way people access and search the internet has significantly changed advertising techniques. In this article we discuss the most effective search engine marketing options.

Getting The Most Out of Search Engines

Search engines are similar to the streets of a large city. Some streets are major avenues where people congregate for work, meals, shopping, and meeting colleagues and friends. Other streets are dead ends with little or no activity.

To get the most traffic to your website, you need your website to be located on a major avenue. Your search engine marketing should focus on Google, Yahoo, and MSN. These three search engines control the majority of all internet traffic, up to 95% of all search engine traffic. Not only do most people use these three search engines, but the search engines utilize the smaller search engines as well. All three search engines have marketing tools that involve pay-per-click advertising programs and search engine optimization.

Pay-per-click programs charge a fee based on the number of hits or clicks to your website from the search engine. The fees generally vary based on the popularity of the keywords used in the search query. The more popular your keywords, the higher the fee. You can set minimum and maximum amounts for which you are willing to pay. This is a good option for getting visitors to your site quickly. The advantage to PPC is immediate traffic. The disadvantage is that you are paying for traffic. This requires you to continually monitor the traffic and determine if first time visitors turn into customers.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is by far the most effective search engine marketing. With SEO, the goal is to get your website ranked within the top ten rankings on the keywords searched. Once you obtain the goal, you receive more traffic then you would from PPC programs. The cost is minimal, and your profit margins increase significantly. The advantage of SEO is cost savings. The disadvantage is that it often takes up to a year to obtain top rankings from Google and Yahoo. MSN ranking results will be visible sooner.

In planning your internet marketing, it is good practice to employ the use of PPC initially and incorporate a longer term plan with SEO. Banner ads are often ineffective and costly. Linking is not as effective as it was with the inception of the internet. It is important to consider both your short term and long term goals when planning your internet marketing campaign. Choose keywords that are meaningful and describe your business accurately. Use the tools that are available that illustrate how visitors found your site. By analyzing your visitor traffic, you will be able to easily identify the patterns and popularity of keyword searches that brought visitors to your site.
